No answer!

In Myanmar, if people do not agree with a proposal, get upset or feel offended they do not show up or answer the phone any longer. They say yes and smile when bidding farewell but you will never see or hear from them again or at least for a long period.

There is no negotiation, confrontation nor fight. This is the culture in a traditional and Buddhist country. We experienced, heard from local Burmese people or read in some Myanmar books about this avoidance. Coming from another culture we are just amazed, frustrated and many times upset. You think you have a deal but the next day you realise that actually the other part was not happy with the proposal and you wait or call in vain. And this is not only the case for interactions between the locals and foreigners; it many times happen between the Myanmar people that they avoid each other without being clear of the reason - at most one can just guess. The rich people will even reach for a lawyer but they will never get into a disagreement with you.

Consider this as the first part of my Myanmar culture and traditions short comments of our second year of stay here.

Yangon Echoes

A few weeks ago, the International Friendship Group of Yangon organised the presentation of the Yangon Echoes book in the presence of the authors Virginia Henderson and Tom Webster. The publisher River Books presents the book as being “an unprecedented work of oral history, (...) a rich anthology of fascinating life stories exploring notions and values of heritage and home”. We too bought this interesting book which lies now on our coffee table. From time to time we enjoy reading the stories of some of the families living in the remaining heritage buildings of Yangon.

Recently we went to admire a photography exhibition of Tim Webster. Beautiful medium size photographs used in the book were this time exhibited at the NGO Myanmar Deitta. The pictures are still on sale and the funds from the silent auction will be donated to the LinkAge Restaurant and Gallery which is located in downtown. This is a social enterprise that employs and helps street kids. It is a small and friendly restaurant which exhibits some modern paintings on its walls with only 4 or 5 tables. We visited it once and the food was very good.

I would recommend acquiring and reading this book to get an insight of locals' life and daily challenges to live in mostly houses in need of restoration involving high costs.

Ecouri din Yangon

În urmă cu câteva săptămâni, Grupul Internațional de Prietenie din Yangon a prezentat cartea Ecouri din Yangon scrisă de Virginia Henderson și Tom Webster, în prezența autorilor. Editura River Books prezintă cartea ca fiind “o operă de istorie orală fără precedent, (...) o antologie bogată cu povești de viață fascinante care studiază noțiuni și valori de patrimoniu și acasă ”. Am cumpărat și noi această carte interesantă care se află acum pe măsuța noastră din camera de zi. Din când în când ne delectăm citind poveștile familiilor care locuiesc în clădirile de patrimoniu care se mai află prin Yangon.

Recent am fost să admirăm expoziția de fotografie a lui Tim Webster. Fotografiile frumoase, de mărime medie, care sunt folosite și în carte, au fost expuse în sala ONG-ului Myanmar Deitta. Pozele se pot încă cumpăra prin licitație, iar fondurile obținute vor fi donate către restaurantul și galeria LinkAge. Acesta este un proiect social care angajează și ajută copii ai străzii. Restaurantul este mic, dar prietenos cu patru sau cinci mese. Acesta are expuse pe pereți câteva picturi moderne, de unde și numele de galerie. Am fost o dată să luăm cina aici, iar mâncarea a fost foarte bună.

Aș recomanda cumpărarea și citirea cărții pentru a vă face o imagine despre viața și provocările zilnice ale localnicilor, care trăiesc în case de patrimoniu, dar care, în marea lor majoritate, trebuie restaurate cu costuri mari.

One year in Burma! Un an în Birmania!

One year ago, on the 11th of June, we arrived in Myanmar.

When touching down in Yangon we had a mix of emotions and feelings but what I remember still today is that we were both very tired. The tiredness remained for many months. Like the rain that just started to intensify when we arrived.

I started a blog. The idea behind it was to bring the country and its people closer to my family and friends back home. The first year of blogging was inspired mostly by the places we visited and I hope I was able to "show" you some beautiful areas throughout Myanmar and beyond.

As you have noticed I enjoy having fun with my camera so I showcase below my favourite pictures, some of which you may already have seen on the blog. Each of them has a short story that goes with it, or I was experiencing different emotions when I took the picture.

Cu un an în urmă, pe 11 iunie, am ajuns în Myanmar.

 

Aterizând în Yangon, emoții și sentimente diverse ne-au copleșit, iar ce îmi amintesc încă astăzi este că eram amândoi foarte obosiți. Obosiți am rămas încă multe luni. La fel și ploaia care a început să se intensifice când am ajuns.

 

Am început să scriu pe blog. Ideea era să aduc țara și locuitorii mai aproape de familia și prietenii de acasă. În anul în care a trecut am fost inspirată îndeosebi de locurile vizitate. Eu sper să fi reușit să vă "arăt" niște zone frumoase ale Myanmarului, dar și unele din afara țării.

 

După cum ați observat îmi place să fotografiez. Astfel, mai jos se află pozele mele preferate, pe unele poate le-ați văzut deja pe blog. Fiecare fotografie are o scurtă poveste sau am trăit diferite emoții atunci când am hotărât să fac poza.

 

Și nu rata concluzia de la sfârșit!

This beautiful girl was selling jade necklaces to tourists waiting for a boat to take them to the former royal capital, Ava. You will surely agree that the beautiful painted face and the Aung San Suu Kyi’s style roses attract the eyes. The thanaka paste was used in an artistic way which is rarely seen.

She was friendly, smiled a lot and was happy to talk to tourists and let them photograph her. The girl spoke basic English and learnt some phrases in French and German from the tourists. She sat at the pier being one of the first ones to spot the new tourists. I liked her openness and I immediately noticed the smart look in her eyes. Sometimes I wonder if she is still there waiting to welcome new tourists. Weeks later I found a picture of that same girl in an in-flight magazine when flying in Asia.

With this picture I won the "Myanmar through MY eyes" amateur photo competition in June this year.

Această fată frumoasă vindea coliere din jade turiștilor care așteptau barca să îi ducă în vechea capitală regală, Ava. Sigur sunteți de acord că fața pictată frumos și trandafirii din păr după stilul lui Aung San Suu Kyi îți atrage privirea. Modul în care îi este pictată fața cu thanaka este rar întâlnit.

Ea era prietenoasă, zâmbea des, era fericită să vorbească cu turiștii și să fie fotografiată. Fata vorbea o engleză simplă și învățase niște fraze în franceză și germană de la turiști. Stătea pe chei, fiind printre cei dintâi să-i întâmpine pe noii turiști. Mi-a plăcut faptul că avea o fire deschisă și imediat am văzut privirea inteligentă din ochii ei. Câteodată mă întreb dacă încă așteaptă în același loc turiștii. Săptămâni după am găsit o poză cu fața ei într-o revistă de la bordul unui avion în timp ce călătoream în Asia.

În luna iunie a acestui an am câștigat cu această poză expoziția de fotografie pentru amatori "Myanmarul Văzut prin Ochii Mei".

The boy in the below picture was studying our group of three when we passed by his house in the village of Kinpun at the base of Mount Kyaiktiyo on which the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is perched (also known as the Golden Rock). His eyes followed us along the road, his body staying still with amazement. This curiosity I found it on many other faces, both young and old, when travelling around the country or even walking in Yangon.

The people stare, many having never seen a Westerner except in newspapers or maybe television, coming from rural areas without any contact with tourists. It happens many times that people stop you and ask to have a picture with you. Sometimes entire groups of young students on their study trip encircle you and ask for a picture. Nowadays the mobiles are very popular and young people just love to pose next to you.

Când am trecut prin fața casei sale, aflată în satul Kinpun la baza muntelui Kyaiktiyo pe care este așezată pagoda Kyaiktiyo, băiatul din poza de mai jos a studiat grupul nostru format din trei persoane. Ochii lui ne-au urmărit de-a lungul drumului, corpul fiind încremenit de uimire. Această curiozitate am găsit-o pe multe alte fețe, atât tinere cât și mai în vârstă, când călătorim prin țară sau chiar prin Yangon.  

Oamenii se zgâiesc, mulți nevăzând un vestic înainte cu excepția ziarelor sau poate a televizorului, venind din zone rurale fără nici un contact cu turiștii. Se întâmplă de multe ori să te oprească diverse persoane și să te roage să facă o poză cu tine. Câteodată chiar grupuri întregi de elevi te înconjoară pentru o poză. Acum telefoanele mobile sunt foarte populare, iar oamenilor le place să pozeze alături de tine.

This baby boy was peacefully sleeping on his mother’s lap while she was praying at the Shwedagon pagoda. Sleeping is very much done in public here. And nobody is bothered by the noise or even the indiscreet looks of the strangers. Because of the light, noise and the heat people wake up very early and are tired already before noon. They doze off at the most random places wherever they feel sleepy. Many times in Yangon we have the feeling the locals live like in a big village where everything is done in common: washing, sleeping, eating, praying.

Acest băiețel dormea liniștit în poala mamei sale în timp ce ea se ruga în pagoda Shwedagon. Aici este normal să dormi în locuri publice și nimeni nu este deranjat de zgomot sau de privirile indiscrete ale străinilor. Din cauza luminii, a zgomotului și a căldurii oamenii se trezesc foarte devreme și sunt deja obosiți înainte de prânz. Ațipesc la întâmplare, oriunde li se face somn. De multe ori în Yangon avem impresia că localnicii se află într-un sat mare unde totul se face în comun: spălarea, dormitul, mâncarea și rugăciunea.

The story behind this picture is one of chasing. First the girl and her friends chased us to sell us plastic bags to put our flip-flops in while visiting the Shwedagon pagoda. It ended up by me chasing her with my camera finally managing to get a snapshot of her pretty face. She was chatty and bold but in the same time very shy to pose for a picture. It happens many times that people are shy especially with foreigners. Sometimes to hide the shyness they start laughing. Like a smile, the affirmative answer, yes, may have so many meanings in Myanmar! Indeed the Burmese people will rarely say no to you. One has to learn the different ways in which people say yes and figure out the meaning behind it.

Povestea din spatele acestei poze este una de urmărire. La început fata din poză și prietenii ei ne-au urmărit insistând să ne vândă pungi de plastic în care să ne punem șlapii în timp ce vizitam pagoda Shwedagon. S-a încheiat cu mine urmărind-o pe ea cu aparatul foto pentru a-i poza chipul drăguț. Era vorbăreață și obraznică, dar în același timp timidă să pozeze în fața camerei. Deseori oamenii sunt timizi, mai ales cu străinii. Câteodată pentru a-și ascunde timiditatea încep să râdă. Ca și un zâmbet, afirmația da poate avea atât de multe înțelesuri în Myanmar! Într-adevăr, birmanezii îți vor spune foarte rar nu. Trebuie să înveți modurile diferite în care se spune da și să-ți dai seama de sensul din spatele unei afirmații.

Probably the most photographed people in the Buddhist countries are monks. This monk was sitting with his two other fellow monks in one of the old temples of Bagan. He was less willing to face the camera and was very often gazing on the side. The other two younger companions were smiling to the tourists who wished to take pictures of them. I like the seriousness of this young monk but I have the feeling when studying his face that I see a hint of pride as well. Going to a monastery and becoming a monk is a very high honour for the family in the Buddhist countries.

Probabil cei mai fotografiați oameni în țările budiste sunt călugării. Acest călugăr se afla, împreună cu alți doi, în unul din templele Baganului. Era mai puțin dispus să privească în aparatul de fotografiat și se uita des într-o parte. Ceilalți doi companioni mai tineri zâmbeau celor care voiau să le facă poze. Mi-a plăcut seriozitatea acestui tânăr călugăr, dar, studindu-i fața, am impresia că descopăr în același timp o notă de mândrie. Pentru familia dintr-o țară budistă faptul de a avea un membru al familiei într-o mănăstire, călugăr, este o onoare.

It was during our Shan trip that we had lunch at this women’s house. Both pictures show the same lady. I chose to photograph her from behind as I wanted to concentrate on the smoke coming from the cigar. I waited long enough for the shot so as to allow her to light a cheroot and for the smoke to mix with her hair. Actually we saw quite a few women smoking cheroot cigars in the Shan state. The second picture was taken when she and her grandchildren joined us in the main room. We all sat in a circle and stared at each other. We had no translator. She started laughing heartily when I showed her some of the shots and she was enjoying the attention. When noticing that I was interested in her back tattoos which were showing three pagodas she allowed me to take a good snapshot. After smoking the cigar she went on the narrow balcony to continue weaving at her small traditional weaving station.

Am servit masa în casa acestei femei în timp ce călătoream prin regiunea Shan. Ambele poze înfățișează aceeași femeie. Am ales să o fotografiez din spate pentru că doream să mă concentrez pe fumul care se ridica de la țigară. Am așteptat destul de mult până să fac poza pentru a-i da timp să își aprindă o țigară și pentru ca fumul să se amestece cu părul ei. De fapt am văzut destul de multe femei fumând trabuc în regiunea Shan. Cea de-a doua poză a fost realizată atunci când ni s-a alăturat, împreună cu nepoții în camera principală. Stăteam cu toții în cerc și ne zgâiam unii la alții. Nu aveam interpret. A început să râdă cu poftă când i-am arătat unele poze și îi plăcea să fie în mijlocul atenției. Când a văzut că sunt interesată de tatuajele ei de pe spate, reprezentând trei pagode, mi-a dat voie să le fotografiez. După ce a terminat trabucul s-a reîntors pe balconul îngust continuând să țese la războiul tradițional de mici dimensiuni.

What a beautiful sunset at the U Bein Bridge in Mandalay! Built around 1850 this old bridge has a special charm given by the old and weather beaten teak wood. As you may imagine the best moment to take a boat to see the bridge is when the sun goes down among the stilts, after one full day of touring the former royal capitals in the Mandalay region. I made endless pictures not looking for the perfect one but just being amazed by the beautiful sunset and scenery. These were the last pictures at the end of one fantastic day around Mandalay.

Ce apus de soare frumos la podul U Bein din Mandalay! Construit în jurul anului 1850 acest pod vechi are un farmec aparte care se datorează lemnului de teak vechi și bătut de vreme. După cum vă puteți imagina cel mai potrivit moment pentru a lua o barcă și a admira podul este atunci când soarele coboară printre bârnele care îl susțin, după o zi plină de plimbări prin fostele capital regale ale Mandalayului. Am făcut poze nenumărate necăutând poza perfectă, dar fiind uimită de frumosul apus de soare și priveliște. Acestea au fost ultimele poze la sfârșitul unei zile minunate în jurul Mandalayului.

Amazement

The sunsets in Myanmar are amazing. We enjoyed them in Mandalay, Ngwe Saung beach and in the Mergui archipelago. This picture is made at the Ngwe Saung beach, on a boat with its anchor out, trying our luck at fishing. Here in Myanmar I witnessed the longest sunsets ever. You have plenty of time to notice the change in colours of the sea and the sky. You have enough time to smile and dream!

Apusurile de soare în Myanmar sunt impresionante. Ne-am bucurat de ele în Mandalay, pe plaja Ngwe Saung și în arhipelagul Mergui. Poza aceasta a fost realizată de pe un vaporaș, lângă plaja Ngwe Saung, ancorați pe mare, încercându-ne norocul la pescuit. Aici în Myanmar am fost martorii celor mai lungi apusuri de soare. Ai timp destul să observi diversele culori care transformă cerul și marea. Ai timp suficient să zâmbești și să visezi!

The below image of the perfect Caribbean beach was taken while sailing in the Mergui Archipelago. And it was not only one but several beautiful beaches on each of the islands we stopped at. A dream beach holiday for me means white sand, an emerald warm sea and few tourists. You could not but wonder how rich this country is! I cannot recommend enough a sailing trip to the Mergui Arhipelago to discover these beautiful unspoilt islands!

Imaginea de mai jos cu plaja perfectă, de genul celor din Caraibe, a fost făcută în timp ce navigam în arhipelagul Mergui. Și nu am găsit doar una ci mai multe plaje frumoase pe fiecare insulă la care am lăsat ancora. O vacanță de vis la plajă înseamnă pentru mine nisip alb, apă caldă de smarald și puțini turiști. Nu puteai decât să te minunezi de bogăția acestei țări! Recomand cu căldură o excursie în arhipelagul Mergui, pe o barcă, să descoperi aceste insule virgine frumoase!

The barefoot lady working her field in the Shan state reminds me of the everyday struggle the famers have to face in Myanmar where conditions are extremely difficult and the infrastructure is underdeveloped. Everywhere on the fields people work the rich red earth with very old and simple tools or industrial revolution-era machineries and more often than not with water-buffalos. This lady continued digging the field while we passed by. She was alone and seemed very concentrated on her work.

Femeia desculță ce își lucra ogorul în regiunea Shan mi-a amintit de lupta zilnică pe care o duc țăranii din Myanmar unde condițiile sunt extrem de dificile și infrastructura este subdezvoltată. Peste tot pe câmpuri, oamenii lucrează pământul roșu și bogat cu utilaje simple sau ustensile din epoca revoluției industriale și de cele mai multe ori doar cu bivoli. Femeia și-a continuat munca în timp ce noi treceam. Era singură și părea foarte concentrată.

We found this old fisherman on the Inle lake during our sunset excursion. Probably during the day he was fishing his meals on the lake while in the evening he was making some money by enchanting the tourists with his equilibristic movements. He was posing for a few minutes before approaching to receive his tip. He was old and very thin like most of the Myanmar people. He was constantly losing his meager earnings back into the water through the whole in his torn shirt breast-pocket. I was amazed, happy and sad at the same time!

În timp ce eram pe lacul Inle să admirăm apusul soarelui, am întâlnit acest bătrân pescar. Probabil  în timpul zilei își pescuia mâncarea pe lac, în timp ce seara făcea niște bani încântându-i pe turiști cu mișcările lui de echilibristică. A pozat pentru câteva minute după care s-a apropiat să își primească banii. Era bătrân și foarte slab, ca și majoritatea oamenilor din Myanmar. Din buzunarul rupt al cămășii îi cădeau mereu în apa lacului puținii bani câștigați.  Am fost uimită, fericită și tristă în același timp!

Happiness and hope

I would like to end the presentation with this funny and full of hope picture of a child trying to mount a buffalo. It is a picture made on a field in the same beautiful Shan state where the family of the child was working. He was playing and trying his strength with the animal that was very patient. We were told that the buffalos are gentle with and trust the people they belong to.

Aș dori să închei prezentarea cu această poză simpatică și plină de speranță a unui băiat care încearcă să se urce pe un bivol. Este o poză făcută pe un ogor unde familia copilului lucra, în aceeași regiune frumoasă Shan. El se juca măsurându-și puterile cu animalul care era foarte răbdător. Ni s-a spus că bivolii sunt foarte blajini și au încredere în oamenii de care aparțin.

 

To conclude, as far as I got to know the country and its inhabitants, I would describe the people as beautiful, curious, serene, shy, but full of pride, having to face still many hardships in life, in the same time filled with dreams and having a rich culture and traditions and overall happy and hopeful for the future. We must confess many times during the past year we were amazed by such a varied and different culture than ours!

În încheiere, atât cât am ajuns să cunosc țara și pe locuitorii ei, i-aș descrie pe oameni ca fiind frumoși, curioși, senini, timizi, dar plini de mândrie, având în față încă multe greutăți de trecut, în același timp plini de vise, cu o cultură și tradiții bogate și în ansamblu fericiți și cu speranțe pentru viitor. Trebuie să recunoaștem că în ultimul an, am fost de multe ori uimiți de cultura variată și diferită față de a noastră!



1st place in the "Myanmar Through MY Eyes" amateur photo exhibition!

Yesterday evening, 28 May 2015, I won the first prize in the amateur photography competition Myanmar Through MY Eyes organised by the International Friendship Group of Yangon. The event was hosted by the Goethe Institute.

 

The photo contest was open for everybody to submit up to three pictures. In total there were 101 pictures entered for this competition. The exhibition was actually a fundraising  event with a silent auction for all the photographs. The over 1500 USD which were raised will be used to help a school about two hours outside of Yangon to install new windows and repair the walls and the ceiling after the destruction of Cyclone Nargis (2008). The school has received funds from other groups as well and is hoping to finish the renovation works soon.

 

There were twelve photos which were selected and which will be used next year for further fundraising in the form of calendars and notebooks. As mentioned, my pictures were awarded the first but also the seventh place (see the two pictures below).

I really enjoyed the evening admiring some beautiful photographs, chatting to some nice people while being hosted in the new location of the Goethe Institute which is a beautiful old colonial building in the renovation for the moment.

Probably you are curious about the prize which is a return ticket for one person to....Vietnam!!! Anyway we were planning to return soon to visit the northern part of this beautiful country. It seems this time we will fly Vietnam Airlines!!!

Primul loc la concursul de fotografie pentru amatori Myanmarul Văzut Prin Ochii Mei!

Ieri seară, pe 28 mai 2015, am câștigat primul loc la concursul de fotografie pentru amatori Myanmarul Văzut prin Ochii Mei organizat de Grupul de Prietenie Internațional din Yangon. Evenimentul a fost găzduit de către Institutul Goethe.

Participarea a fost deschisă tuturor, iar fiecare persoană putea înscrie până la trei fotografii. În total au fost 101 fotografii care au intrat în concurs. Întreaga expoziție a fost de fapt un eveniment de strângere de fonduri cu o licitație pentru fotografiile expuse. Cei peste 1500 USD care au fost strânși vor fi folosiți pentru renovarea unei școli aflate la aproximativ douaă ore distanță de Yangon și care avea nevoie de ferestre noi, de repararea pereților și a acoperișului distruse în urma ciclonului Nargis (2008). Școla a primit fonduri și de la alte grupuri și speră să termine în curând renovările.

12 poze au fost selectate și  acestea vor fi folosite anul viitor pentru calendare și carnețele în vederea strângerii de fonduri pentru acțiuni caritabile. Cum am amintit deja, pozele mele au obținut premiul întâi, iar o alta a fost pe locul șapte (vezi cele două poze mai sus).

Mi-a plăcut seara admirând fotografii frumoase, vorbind cu invitați simpatici în timp ce ne aflam în noua locație a institutului Goethe care este o clădire veche, colonială în curs de renovare.

 

Probabil sunteți curioși să știți care a fost premiul. Este un bilet dus-întors spre...Vietnam!!! Oricum plănuiam să ne întoarcem curând în această țară frumoasă. Se pare că de data aceasta vom zbura cu Vietnam Airlines!!!

 

 

 

 

Discovering the Inle lake and trekking the Shan state

The main tourist attraction of the Shan state is the Inle lake situated in the southern part of the region, 1h10 minutes by plane from Yangon (232 USD/person return ticket – May 2015).

The lake is shallow, long, and with many canals giving the possibility for beautiful long-tail boat trips and picturesque views on the surrounding high hills.

 

 

Numerous villages are spread on and around the lake with the inhabitants making a living as farmers, fishermen or craftsmen.

 

 

We were looking forward to see the unique floating gardens and plantations on the lake which are carefully taken care of by the villagers. We were guided by boat into narrow canals between tomato and bottleneck gourd plantations, a fruit which is cooked as a vegetable while discovering farmers´ houses on stilts and villagers on their boats fully loaded with weeds to fertilize the gardens.

 

 

 

 

 

Early morning or late evening the fishermen are trying their fishing skills using different fishing nets which by now became famous having been photographed and printed in so many magazines. The same goes for their unique one leg rowing technique due to the need to see the algae which floats on the water.

 

 

 

There are plenty of workshops on the lake with the Shan people being known to be skilful in working silver, gold, iron, wood, cotton, silk and even lotus stems or the cheroot leaves to produce the cigars enjoyed by local men and women alike.

 

 

 

 

Some tourists, probably in a rush to discover other places close by like Bagan or Mandalay, stay only one full day on the lake enough time to visit the floating gardens, workshops and some pagodas. If lucky enough they will also see the floating market on the lake which is a five day rotating market organised in different places on the lake. Inthein has the most beautiful complex of old pagodas and stupas many of which are in ruins and with overgrown vegetation. It is situated at the end of a long canal with many small dams built with bamboo having a small spillway in the middle which is wide enough to enter upstream with the narrow boat. We visited Inthein at the end of the day as the last sightseeing and it proved to be an excellent choice. We got good prices at the souvenir stands and we were the last tourists to visit the ancient complex of pagodas with beautiful carvings.

 

 

 

 

On our way back we watched the kids playing in the water, the buffalos cooling down after one hot day of work and the villagers washing themselves from the dust and sweat after having worked all day in the fields.

 

 

My advice if you plan to visit Inle lake is to take time and book for three nights to have enough time for a beautiful sunset on the lake on the first evening (make it romantic: bring a bottle of wine and ask the hotel for glasses), with a full day excursion on the lake the second day and on the last day with a hike to the Red Mountain vineyard and with the rest of the day enjoying a book, relaxing at the spa or watching the birds through the binoculars provided by some of the upscale hotels, like the Inle Princess Resort.

 

 

By the way, do not set your expectations high when sampling the Myanmar wine which still needs to be refined to reach the standard of a good quality wine but the hike up to the vineyard and the beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding mountainous area are worth the visit.

 

 

If you want to discover the rural area, the villages and the hills surrounding the lake you should book a guide for a trek from the Inle lake to Kalaw, a small city 62 km from Inle at an altitude of 1300m. It is a standard trek offered by several agencies in Kalaw. Actually the trek is easier if be done downhill from Kalaw to Inle lake but we decided to go uphill and take the train back to Inle.

 

 

 

The train ride was not as impressive as we would have expected in terms of landscapes but the ride was a unique experience as such and on some parts of the track you get the impression that the train will jump off the rail as it violently rocks from one side to another or jumps up and down on its outdated springs. And sampling the local food bought in the train stations from ladies selling the products on baskets placed on their head made this ride memorable.

 

We did the trek in three days (two nights) with over five hours of walking daily. For us it was the highlight of our Shan holiday due to the picturesque landscapes and the possibility to witness the way the villagers live and work. On many fields we noticed people working the land with mechanical and machines that should belong in a museum. And we saw a full range of cows and bullocks which are everywhere and represent the main help for the people while working the land. The sleeping and eating was done at people’s houses. For that day the owners of the house squeezed in another room or part of the house and we received their sleeping quarter which was, as you may imagine, quite spartan and basic with a thin mattress on the floor and blankets for the pretty cold nights. Evenings we enjoyed the delicious food cooked with fresh ingredients on the traditional small coal cooking stoves.

 

 

The toilet and the “shower” were in small, improvised sheds in the garden. Indeed, for some, it might be difficult to wash with the “shower” being a bucket with yellow water surrounded by a plastic sheet for some privacy.

Here are some of our thoughts looking back at our first Shan state visit:

• The beautiful sunset on the lake with a bottle of wine will remain unforgettable. We were lucky enough to spot an old local fisherman who was showing us his equilibristic movements juggling his Inle-specific fishing net;

 

• We were amazed by the way the locals 'ride' their boats with one foot rowing while balancing the other on the stern;

• Our thoughts wandered free while speeding with the long tail boat, watching the fishermen, the birds and the lake’s vegetation;

 

• We admired the floating gardens spotting the various vegetables and were impressed by the hardworking Shan people who use each piece of land on their hills to cultivate fruits, cauliflower, cabbage, ginger, potatoes, garlic, tea leaves, etc. 

 

 

 

 

• We thought about the simple but at the same time hard life of the various tribes living in the Shan state, people for whom the village is a big family with people paying visits to their neighbours in the evening and women chatting and laughing at the fences.

We would advise not to wait too long to visit this rich and picturesque region of Myanmar as we saw that tourism starts developing quickly with bungalows being built and more and more trekking routes being organised. We do hope that the region will retain its authenticity in the in the coming years keeping the simple, beautiful and hard working people safe and happy.

Descoperind lacul Inle și facând o drumeție în regiunea Shan

Principala atracție turistică a regiunii Shan este lacul Inle situat în partea sudică a regiunii la o oră și jumătate cu avionul de Yangon (232 USD/persoană, dus-întors - mai 2015).

Lacul este puțin adânc, lung și și cu multe canale având posibilitatea de a face frumoase plimbări cu barca tradițională, admirând dealurile pitorești ce înconjoară lacul. Sate numeroase sunt împrăștiate pe și în jurul lacului cu locuitorii practicând agricultura, pescuitul sau meșteșugăritul.

Așteptam cu nerăbdare să vedem grădinile și plantațiile plutitoare unice care se găsesc pe lac și care sunt îngrijite de săteni. Am fost conduși cu barca pe canale înguste printre rânduri de roșii și un tip de dovlecel specific zonei în timp ce descopeream casele pe buturugi ale fermierilor și vedeam sătenii cu bărcile pline de plaur (alge, plante ce cresc la suprafața lacului) pentru a fertiliza grădinile plutitoare. Dimineața devreme sau seara pescarii pescuiesc utlizând diverse instrumente și plase de pescuit unele specifice lacului, care au devenit faimoase fiind fotografiate și imprimate în multe reviste. La fel de vestită este tehnica lor de vâslit, dintr-un picior, pentru a ocoli plaurul de la suprafața apei. Pe lac se găsesc numeroase ateliere de meșteșugărit oamenii din regiunea Shan fiind talentați în prelucrarea argintului, aurului, fierului, bumbacului, mătăsii și chiar a tulpinilor de lotus sau a frunzelor de cheroot din care se fac țigări de care se bucură atât femeile cît și bărbații.

Unii turiști, probabil grăbiți să descopere alte locuri aflate în apropiere cum ar fi Bagan sau Mandalay, stau doar o zi plină având destul timp să viziteze grădinile plutitoare, atelierele de meșteșugărit și unele temple.

Dacă sunt norocoși vor vedea și o piață plutitoare care se organizează timp de cinci zile, prin rotație, în diferite locații de pe lac. Inthein are cel mai frumos complex de temple și stupe vechi, multe în ruină, cu vegetație crescută printre piatra veche. Acest complex de temple se află la capătul unui canal lung care are, din loc în loc, improvizate niște baraje din lemn de bambus lăsând doar o intrare îngustă pentru bărci. Am vizitat Inthein la sfârșitul zilei și s-a dovedit a fi o alegere bună. Am obținut prețuri foarte bune la mesele pline de suveniruri și am fost ultimii turiști să ne plimbăm în complexul de temple care aveau sculpturi deosebite. Pe drum înapoi priveam copiii care se jucau în apă, bivolii care se răcoreau după o zi fierbinte de împins la plug și sătenii care se spălau de praful și transpirația zilei lucrate pe câmp.

Sfatul meu, dacă plănuiești să vizitezi lacul Inle, este să îți iei timp și să rezervi trei nopți de cazare pentru un frumos apus de soare în prima zi (petrece-l romantic și adu în bagaj o sticlă de vin, cere pahare de la hotel), cu o excursie de o zi pe lac în cea de-a doua zi și în ultima zi cu o plimbare spre podgoria Muntele Roșu, iar în restul timpului te poți odihni, citi o carte, relaxa la spa sau privy păsările cu binoclul pus la dispoziție de unele hotelem, cum ar fi hotelul Inle Princess.

Apropo, nu avea mari așteptări când vei încerca vinul myanmarez care încă trebuie să fie îmbunătățit pentru a obține nivelul de calitate al unui vin bun, dar plimbarea până sus la podgorie și priveliștile frumoase cu lacul și munții din jur fac să merite această excursie.

Dacă vrei să descoperi zona rurală, satele și dealurile ce înconjoară lacul trebuie să rezervi o excursie cu ghid pentru o drumeție de la lacul Inle spre Kalaw, un oraș mic la 62 km de inle și la o altitudine de 1300m.

Aceasta este o drumeție standard oferită de câteva agenții în Kalaw. De fapt drumeția este mai ușoară dacă este făcută din Kalaw spre Inle pentru că cobori, dar noi am ales să o facem în sensul invers și apoi să luăm trenul înapoi spre lac. Călătoria cu trenul nu a fost așa de impresionantă precum ne așteptam în termen de priveliști, dar drumul propriu-zis a fost o experiență unică, pe anumite porțiuni aveai impresia că o să sară vagonul de pe șină fiind scuturat dintr-o parte în alta. Am gustat și mâncarea vândută de femei în coșurile de pe cap pe care am cumparat-o când ne opream în diferitele stații de tren. Astfel, călătoria cu trenul va rămâne una memorabilă.

Am făcut drumeția în trei zile (2 nopți) cu peste cinci ore de mers zilnic. Pentru noi au fost momentele cele mai frumoase din întreaga vacantă datorită peisajelor pitorești și a posibilității de a vedea cum trăiesc și lucrează țăranii. Pe multe ogoare aceștia muncesc cu mașini și instrumente care ar trebui să se afle de mult într-un muzeu al satului. Am văzut foarte multe vaci și bivoli care reprezintă principalul ajutor al oamenilor în muncile câmpului. Dormeam și mâncam la casele oamenilor. Pentru seara respectivă gazdele se îngrămădeau în altă cameră sau parte a casei și noi primeam camera folosită pentru a dormi. Condițiile după cum vă puteți imagina erau destul de spartane cu patul care era de fapt o saltea subțire pusă direct pe jos sau pe un placaj înălțat la care primeam pături pentru nopțile destul de răcoroase. Serile ne-am bucurat și am gustat mâncarea delicioasă pregătită cu ingrediente proaspete pe micile sobele tradiționale cu cărbune. Toaleta și dușul se găseau în grădină. “Dușul” era improvizat, cu o folie de plastic pentru inimitate și un lighean cu apă gălbuie care nu prea te invita să te speli.

Mai jos sunt câteva impresii după scurta vacanță în regiunea Shan:

• Va rămâne de neuitat frumosul apus de soare pe lac savurând un pahar de vin. Am fost norocoși să intâlnim un pescar bătrân care ne-a încântat cu mișcările lui de echilibristică în timp ce își înălța coșul de pescuit;
• Am fost impresionați de modul în care localnicii vâslesc cu un picior în timp ce cu celălalt își țin echilibrul pe barcă;
• Gândurile noastre au alergat libere în timp ce înaintam pe lac cu viteză fiind transportați într-o barcă tradițională, uitându-ne la pescari, păsări și vegetația de pe lac;
• Am admirat grădinile plutitoare cu legume variate și am rămas impresionați de oamenii harnici care muncesc din greu folosind fiecare bucată de pământ, chiar pe dealuri înalte, să cultive diverse fructe, conopidă, varză, ghimbir, cartofi, usturoi, ceai, etc;
• Am cugetat la viața simplă și în același timp grea a diverselor triburi care locuiesc în regiunea Shan, oameni pentru care satul reprezintă familia extinsă cu oameni vizitându-se seara și femei sporovăind și râzând pe la garduri.

V-am recomanda să nu așteptați prea mult pentru a vizita această regiune bogată și pitorească pentru că am observat că turismul începe să se dezvolte în zonă, cu unele hotele deja construindu-se și din ce în ce mai multe drumeții și trasee fiind oferite turiștilor. Noi sperăm ca regiunea să își mențină originalitatea și farmecul și în anii ce urmează, iar oamenii harnici, frumoși și simpli să rămână veseli și în siguranță.
