The Inle traditional tattoo

A few weeks ago we watched a local artist make a traditional tattoo. We found Saya U Kyaw Soe in Inle lake through an article written on throughardenseyes blog. It was indeed a unique experience even if I was not the one to get the tattoo!

Behind the bamboo walls of the thatched roof house we were welcomed by the kind and smiling family of the tattoo artist made up of his wife, daughter and baby granddaughter. The wife immediately served us with tea, bananas and nuts making us feel comfortable in their house.

In one of the corners of the living room U Kyaw Soe had all his traditional utensils and bottles with ink on display. He is a man of few words.

A design was chosen with the help of the tattoo master who explained the signification, most of the traditional drawings being Buddhist signs and bringing protection, strength and good luck to the bearer. The translator was our taxi driver who was waiting for us, the artist not speaking English. In the small kitchen the wife started to busy herself at the small charcoal oven, boiling the long needle needed for inking the tattoo.

The artist started to draw with a pen the lines of the motive. He is a very skilled person indeed and in a few minutes began to ink the tattoo with the long needle. The hand was rhythmically going back and forth without missing a dot. It took him around 15 minutes to complete the design. The face of the "lucky one" was at times showing the pain he had to endure on some more sensitive parts of the body where the tattoo was being inked.

The funny part comes at the end. We did not negotiate the price at the beginning for two reasons. We read already on the above mentioned blog that the guy paid only 5 USD so we thought the price will be around this and the second reason was that you were in front of an artist and we thought that maybe he will get offended if we started to negotiate.

Well, we learned a good lesson as it turned out that the price was 50 USD! It seams the publicity is there as the prices increased a lot since the beginning of the year! Nevertheless a good price compared with the ones in Europe and in the end what matters is the experience of getting a traditional tattoo in Myanmar!

 

Tatuajul tradițional de la lacul Inle

În urmă cu câteva săptămâni am privit un artist local făcând un tatuaj tradițional. L-am găsit pe Saya U Kyaw Soe la lacul Inle, printr-un articol publicat pe blogul  throughardenseyes. A fost într-adevăr o experiență unică deși nu am fost eu cea care s-a tatuat!

În spatele pereților de bambus, în casa cu acoperiș de paie, am fost întâmpinați de către familia amabilă și zâmbitoare a maestrului, familie compusă din soție, fiică și nepoțică. Soția ne-a servit imediat cu ceai, banane și alune făcându-ne să ne simțim confortabil în casa lor.

În unul dintre colțurile încăperii principale U Kyaw Soe își avea expuse toate ustensilele tradiționale și sticlele cu cerneală. Artistul este un om destul de tăcut.

A fost ales un model cu ajutorul maestrului care a explicat ce semnifică, majoritatea desenelor tradiționale oferind protecție, putere și noroc celor care le poartă. Interpretul a fost șoferul de taxi care ne aștepta, U Kyaw Soe nevorbind engleză. În bucătăria mică soția a început să fiarbă acul lung folosit la tatuaj în apă clocotită într-un vas care se afla pe o sobă mică de cărbune.

Artistul a desenat mai întâi modelul cu un pix. Este un maestru iscusit și în câteva minute a început să marcheze tatuajul cu ajutorul acului lung și a cernelii.  Mâna i se mișca ritmic înainte și înapoi fără să greșească nici un punct. I-a luat aproximativ 15 minute să finalizeze tatuajul. Fața celui care era tatuat se strâmba din când în când, grimasele dovedind durerea îndurată datorită părții sensibile a corpului ce a fost aleasă pentru tatuaj.

Partea comică vine la sfârșit. Nu am întrebat prețul la început din două motive. Deja aflasem în articolul de pe blogul menționat anterior că tipului i s-a cerut cinci dolari pentru modelul lui și ne gândeam că prețul va fi în jurul aceleași sume. Al doilea motiv a fost că ne aflam în casa unui artist și ni se părea nerespectuos să întrebăm prețul și să negociem.

Ei bine, o lecție pentru viitor deoarece tatuajul a costat 50 USD! Se pare că publicitatea și-a făcut efectul deoarece prețul a crescut de la începutul anului! Cu toate acestea, un preț bun comparat cu prețurile din Europa și apână la urmă ce contează este experiența de a avea un tatuaj tradițioanl făcut pe lacul Inle, în Myanmar!
