...the markets and the small grocery shops around the country still use the traditional Myanmar measurements, the viss and the tical?

The government declared a few years back that it is preparing to switch to the metric system (apparently only three countries in the world are not using the metric system: USA, Liberia and Myanmar)...but nothing changed yet. In the big supermarkets though you buy per kilogram.

So, no wonder I was about to break my hands when in the market I ended up with around 3 kg of vegetables instead of two because one viss is 1.63 kg and one tical is 16.3g.

Viss is used to measure fruits and vegetables and ticals for weighing rice.

The pictures below were taken in the Indian market on the 26th street in Yangon.

...în piețele și magazinele alimentare din Myanmar se folosesc încă unități de măsură tradiționale ce poartă denumirea de viss și tical.

Guvernul a declarat acum câțiva ani că face pregătiri pentru a trece la sistemul metric de măsură (se pare că doar trei țări din lume nu îl folosesc: SUA, Liberia și Myanmar)...dar nimic nu s-a schimbat încă.

Prin urmare, nu este de mirare că era să îmi rup mâinile la piață când am avut de cărat trei kg de legume în loc de două, deoarece un viss este 1.63 kg și un tical este 16.3 g.

Viss este folosit pentru a cântări fructe și legume, iar tical pentru orez.

Pozele de mai sus au fost făcute în piața indiană de pe strada 26 din Yangon.

...the Myanmar's first-ever national minimum wage was approved as of 1st of September and it will apply to all workers from all industries or sectors (with the exception of small businesses employing less than 15 people)?

It has been set at 3,600 Kyats (around 2,8 USD) for a standard 8 hours work day!

...de la 1 septembrie s-a aprobat salariul minim pe economie în Myanmar, fiind pentru prima dată când se stabilește un minim al salariului în istoria țării? Acesta se va aplica tuturor muncitorilor din toate industriile sau sectoarele.

Salariul minim a fost stabilit la 3,600 Kyats (aproximativ 2,8 USD) pe zi lucrătoare de opt ore!

as of 9th of June the Inle lake region was designed as the first biosphere reserve of Myanmar and it is now listed in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve?

This means that attention will be paid on how to preserve biodiversity while sustainable resource utilisation. The area covers 489721 hectares, has 267 species of birds and 43 species of freshwater species. The activities on the lake, practiced by the local community, include floating island agriculture and fishing.

...din 9 iunie regiunea lacului Inle a fost desemnată rezervație a biosferei, prima de acest fel în Myanmar, și este listată în lista UNESCO cu rețeaua mondială a biosferei?

Astfel, se va pune accentul pe o dezvoltare și utilizare durabilă a resurselor, dar care să protejeze, în același timp, biodiversitatea. Zona ocupă 489721 hectare, are 267 de specii de păsări și 43 de specii de pește de apă dulce. Comunitatea locală se ocupă cu agricultura pe insule plutitoare și pescuitul.
